Nirvana in DC

December 17, 2008

All vegetarian restaurant in DC = Nirvana. That’s right, Nirvana features Indian cuisine that is all vegetarian and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is a little bland- the place could use some serious redecorating, but all of that fades away when you taste the food. The food is complex yet simple, spicy yet soothing, and hearty yet not heavy.

Start with the Rasam soup which is made with a base of tomato and chilis. Actually, start with a gigantic indian beer and then move on to the soup. Then chow down on Paneer Masala with a side of basmati rice and paratha (puffy bread brushed with olive oil). The Paneer sauce is creamy and smooth with a kick. The paratha is light and doughy sort of like a savory pancake. The cost is about $10 per entree, soups at $5 and side dishes around $2. It’s pure Nirvana (at 18th and K).
