Dark Chocolate and Red Wine Cookies

Here’s a Valentine’s Day recipe to make you swoon.


A chocolate cookie made with red wine may sound strange, but I assure you it is a tiny bite of heaven. It’s like one of those phenomena that makes you ask, “is this too good to be true?” Like magically scoring tickets to the Oprah Winfrey show  (when it was still on the air) on the very day that she happens to be giving away Christian Louboutins to everyone in the audience! Can you imagine?! Yeah, that’s what these cookies are like. Pure amour.

Ingredients: (makes 2 to 3 dozen cookies)

Adapted from Simply Scratch

1 1/2 cups flour

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 stick unsalted butter

3/4 cup sugar

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup red wine (I used pinot noir, but you could use merlot, red zinfandel or any red table wine)

1 bag (10 oz) semisweet chocolate chips (I used mini chips)

Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 

In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, salt. and baking soda.  Set aside.

In a separate mixing  bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.  Next, add in the egg, vanilla, and red wine.  Mix until well combined.

Then, slowly add in the dry ingredients until mixed well. 

Finally, fold in the chocolate chips.

The batter will be silky and gorgeous. (And tastes incredible!)


Let’s have a closer look.


Spoon the batter onto a prepared baking pan, leaving a few inches in between. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Let cool slightly before serving.



Aren’t these gorgeous? And they are intense. The chocolate is silken with a tangy red wine finish.

These were really good! Came out a bit flatter than I wanted, and I didn’t use any substitutions. The flavor was incredible! The batter had much more red wine flavor (we used Malbec because it’s what we had) and I wish it came out a bit more in the cookies, but you can DEFINITELY tell that the chocolate gets a major boost from the red wine. Awesome!

So, they are amazingly delicious but had a few questions. They are falling apart easily. Is there a particular type of pan to cook in? Did I put too little matter on spoon? Just need advice. Not a baker here. Thanks

Use a cookie sheet. Make sure the cookie dough doesn’t get too wet or dry. Allow to cool fully before removing from cookie sheet. Good luck!

these is amazing =) so i need to know ..is that I can replace the wine? or is it necessary?

Glad you like the recipe! You could definitely use a different type of red wine. If you don’t use wine, you’ll need to sub in something else to give the batter moisture. You could always try Kahlua or Frangelico or another tasty liquor.
