Cue the sexy music. Because this milkshake is smokin’ hot.
Actually, that’s not right at all. It’s ice cold. It’s also creamy, thick, and super chocolatey. And it’s exactly what I’ve been craving as the summer approaches.
Inspired by my first attempt at vegan chocolate pudding, I decided to satisfy my summer milkshake craving in a healthy way – a way that wouldn’t leave me in a sugar coma, feeling uneasy about my upcoming dress fitting (gulp!). Here’s how you make it.
Ingredients: (makes 1 shake)
1 cup vanilla almond milk
1/2 avocado
1 teaspoon cocoa powder
1 Tablespoon chocolate flavored protein powder
3 ice cubes
A good squirt of chocolate (for garnish)
Directions: Blend everything together in a blender. You can put a bit of chocolate syrup into the mix for added sweetness and chocolate flavor. I buy an organic brand of chocolate syrup, but you could use whatever you have on hand.
Drizzle a bit more chocolate on top. Be generous.
Drink to a healthy indulgence!

Im on the prowl for recipes to sneak in avocado and this sounds great. Any suggestions for how much unsweetened cocoa powder to use instead of protein powder? Also, did you refrigerate your avocado so the shake would be cold?
You could simply skip the protein powder or add maybe a teaspoon more of cocoa powder. No need to chill the avocado because the recipe calls for ice. Enjoy!
Just made this and am sipping it now with my 2 year old. LOVE
I did forget to put in the liquid chocolate but I will add it next time. It’s pretty good… a little bitter without it but much better then the 500 calorie chocolate milkshakes from a restaurant
So glad you like it! Much healthier, indeed!
I tried a chocolate avocado milkshake today (not this recipe), but I was sad it didn’t come out very well. It was not sweet enough so the chocolate was bitter and there was spinach in it, which came out too strong and the whole flavor was just kindof off…i doctored it up a bit, but it still wasn’t what i was hoping for. your recipe looks and sounds a lot better!
Oh no! Sorry to hear your milkshake didn’t come out right. Keep in mind that chocolate and spinach are both bitter foods, so you would need to add a sweetener (agave or honey should work). The sweetness in my recipe comes from the chocolate syrup and sweetened vanilla almond milk, which both have added sugar.
Wow, this looks so incredibly yummy yet healthy too!
I try.
That looks delish! I love putting avocados in my smoothies/milkshakes because it makes them so creamy!!
So true!
Yay! Thanks for the vegan recipe! I’ve been raw vegan during the day and vegan at night. I’ll have to try this!
Hope you like it!
I love avocado’s in my smoothie. You really can’t taste it especially with the chocolate. I make a banana avocado smoothie for my boys. Though I’ll have to try it with chocolate syrup as you suggested, I normally use the dark cocoa powder. Looks like a yummy recipe as always!
Thanks! Hope you like it!
Um WOW! I’ve been on the hunt for some healthy dessert-type snacks. I always NEED to have dessert after dinner, but need some lightened up options! Thanks for sharing this deliciousness!
You’re welcome! Enjoy!
Jen, first i love the photos- gorgeous refreshing and clear. Second, I love that you called it smokin hot. Girl after my own heart
Romanticizing food is where it’s at!
Thanks, lady! Sometimes food is sexy, sometimes it’s art, and sometimes, well, it’s just plain tasty!
This sounds wonderful and it is gorgeous! I feel like it is healthy enough to have for breakfast:-)
Definitely! I actually did have it for breakfast.
YUMMYY! i tried this and it was delicious!!! and SOO SIMPLE!!! thanks
Thanks so much for letting me know! So happy you liked it! xoxo
Thank you! This is a recipe I really might be needing the next couple of weeks!
Terrific! I hope you like it!
Do you have to be vegan to drink this? Ok, good. Because I’m not vegan but I am so on board with this!!
Yay!
OK, that looks DELICIOUS. However I won’t lie. When I saw that avocado is an ingredient my eyes got a little wide. Can you taste it? Or does the almond milk and chocolate cover all that up? I’d be interested to know the texture of it too
And girl, I hear you. I’m on uber weight lost mode, though it isn’t going as well as I want :’( Good luck with the dress fitting!! You are going to look gorgeous, I just know it!!
Actually, you can’t taste the avocado at all! I used it to help thicken the shake, but the flavor is totally masked by the vanilla almond milk and cocoa powder (which is super chocolatey). The consistency reminded me a lot of fast food milkshakes that are super smooth and thick. Pretty good! The wedding diet is hard for me too, esp with constantly cooking for the blog. Plus, sometimes you just want a cookie, you know? I’m trying to fit in more week day workouts. Blah.
